My sweet little Ellie. She is only 7 pounds but has the biggest personality of any dog I have ever met.
Ellie came to live with me when she was 8 weeks old and a teeny little two pounds. That was over seven years ago. I had no idea what a big part of my life this little dog would become. She has been my constant buddy. Always up for a walk, an endless source of entertainment, my couch buddy, my footwarmer, and my little snuggler when I am sick or sad.
It seemed like she understood the changes that were happening to me when I was pregnant with Lucy. For a while she was certain to curl up on my stomach anytime I was in a seated or lying down position. Then towards the end she started keeping her distance from me. I'm not sure why.
Lucy loved her even before she was born. Whenever Ellie was on my stomach, Lucy would do extra somersaults in there and poke at my belly from the inside. Ellie was the first thing Lucy responded to besides her dad and I. As a tiny baby she would smile and giggle. One of the first words she has said clearly is "dog" and points right at Ellie. They seem to have a special bond already.
I didn't know how Ellie would handle the changes of having a new baby in the house. She has been AMAZING. She is so gentle and careful with Lucy. She hasn't shown any kind of jealousy even though her little dog world has been turned completely upside down. She went from being my "baby" to being second place. Not many dogs would take that well but she has been so good. Her behavior has even improved some, I think knowing that she needs to be a better dog now that the baby is here.
She has found ways to be her mischievous self, though. She is a bit opportunistic and has had the chance to get away with some stuff. She learned very quickly that when I am distracted with the baby that she can easily steal food off of my plate.
I can't believe how good she has been about leaving the baby toys alone. She loves toys. She has even been ok with Lucy taking her toys away and playing with them. There is one baby toy that I can see Ellie wants to play with so bad. It's a little plush dog that barks and growls. But she has for the most part been so good at not touching it.
Me and my girls just got back from the park. It was such a nice night to enjoy a walk with my little family.
